A partnership with SIAM and COMAP and a guest post on the BIG Network
QUBES has some great news! We partnering with SIAM, NCTM, COMAP and MAA in their effort to help faculty better teach mathematical modeling, encapsulated here in the GAIMME report (link). We hope these efforts creating a joint Modeling Hub will help teachers K - 16 feel more empowered to teach mathematical modeling. While I could go on about the GAIMME report, I want to focus on our other partner activities.
I just spent the weekend at COMAP judging for their Interdisciplinary Modeling Competition (link). What a great time had by all! Last year the question I judged asked students to evaluate water issues in water scarce regions and develop a plan that combined social equity, environmental concerns, and economic concerns. Selected top prize winners are published in COMAP's journal, UMAP. This year was also an amazing experience. I love reading these papers. If you haven't heard of the contest, check it out!
I also recently collaborated with SIAM to write a blog post (link) for their new blog on Business, Industry, and Government jobs (BIG) Network. I drew on my experiences as QUBES Consortium Liaison and thought about how those skills might transfer beyond academia. This is a great blog and SIAM initiative.
