The tools of the digital age are beginning to change the way we interact, the way we learn, the way we act, and the way we define our identities...for better or worse. How can this love affair with all things digital be directed toward positive outcomes and lead to a more connected and informed world of learners that can join together for greater collective impact? By combining and enhancing components of the sociocultural learning theories of Communities of Practice (CoP), knowledge building, funds of knowledge, and place-based education, this paper shares a new theoretical framework and associated design principles for highly collaborative online learning communities. This presentation will share the results of a literature review and theoretical synthesis of the application of sociocultural learning theories for the development of collaborative online learning communities.
