Budgeting for the Workshop

Scholars are expected to participate for the entirety of the BSTD program by participating virtually on QUBES and attending the face-to-face workshop of their cohort. Applicants should budget accordingly and are encouraged to seek funding from their disciplinary departments, teaching and learning centers, professional societies, and other agencies.

Registration Fees

Once accepted into the program, prospective Scholars will be required to pay the registration fee to confirm their participation; this will cover all program materials. Applicants who are not members of the American Society for Microbiology are encouraged to join to receive a discount on the registration fee.

ASM member registration fee: $499
Nonmember registration fee: $599

Travel Costs

Participants must budget and arrange their own airfare, hotel reservations, and any other transportation to attend the in-person workshop at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, in North Bethesda, MD. Participants can expect to spend about $129 (before taxes) per night/per person for the hotel. A block of rooms will be reserved for attendees for three nights at the hotel where the workshop is taking place. Participants planning to attend the ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators (ASMCUE) immediately following the Institute will receive a discount on their ASMCUE registration fee.

Cancellation Policy

The deadline for canceling participation in the program and requesting a registration refund is June 15th. A refund minus a $100 processing fee will be issued for all cancellations received by the June 15th immediately preceding the workshop. No refunds will be granted after that date.
