About the Group

Public Description

The group will serve as the online workspace to accompany "Intersections in Assessment 2022". This online conference will convene a group of 12 Science Learning Assessment experts (6 each of the Higher Education (HE) assessment field and the Informal Science Learning (ISL) assessment field) to explore how proven ISL assessment approaches may inform assessment methods in higher education. Our hypothesis is that this high-level, interactive conference will craft innovative strategies to integrate valid and reliable approaches from one science learning environment (ISL) to another (HE). This meeting of experts in HE and ISL assessment will utilize the wealth of ISL assessment approaches to identify potential new strategies to learning assessment in HE settings. The major outcome will be the identification and recommendation of a potential pilot test of one or two specific, proven methods currently in use in ISL as innovative strategies to test in HE settings. This effort will identify new methods, approaches, and assessment frameworks to revitalize the role of and need for more nuanced and effective assessment in higher education.

Currently, HE is increasingly concerned regarding the effectiveness of assessment - whether methods are assessing what we think they are, or if we are, in fact, assessing the right things. The lack of targeted and effective assessment tools and measures is a void that is acutely felt by faculty engaged in high-impact and engaging teaching, particularly those faculty who have embraced the SENCER ideals. We believe that this conference shall take important steps towards addressing this void, help us identify areas of synergy and divergence in assessment, and set the foundation for further meetings, workshops, and research aimed at finding solutions to address these pressing problems.
