Memorandum of research expectations

Try to address these early and upfront.

  1. Talk about meaningful collaboration.
  2. Talk about employee responsibility early.
  3. Talk about being respectful.
  4. Does your college have a code of conduct?
  5. Show evidence that diverse, collaborative teams are more prolific.
  6. Co-construct student expectations and penalties.
  7. Lead to each student coming up with a contract for behavior and consequences.

Authorship when working with students

  1. Talk about authorship early
  2. Have written guidelines
  3. When a target journal has been identified and you are polishing the work, reach out to former students. Be clear about the criteria for authorship and a date by which you need to know about their participation.
