OCELOTS FMN: Adapting online modules in tropical ecology

Apply by April 15, 2022. Applicants must be able to attend all of the online meetings, including a kick-off meeting the first week in June and small group meetings every week thereafter in June and July, at a time convenient for participants. All faculty, including adjunct and retired faculty, and experts in media and software innovation are welcome. Postdocs and graduate students may also be considered for this workshop.
The application collects basic contact and institutional information and includes answers to the following questions:
- Which of the following four OCELOTS modules do you plan to adapt?
- ‘Snapshot Serengeti Online Lab’ by C. Willis and J. Klemens.
- ‘Restoring tropical forests’ by K. Holl, Z. Zahawi, and San Jose in either English or Spanish
- ‘Healing the Scars: Tropical rainforest carbon cycling – Does it matter which tree species you plant?’ by A. Russell.
- ‘Sounds of the tropics-1, second module, third module’ by T.M. Aide, L. May-Collado and M. Campos-Cerqueira. Please specify which module you will adapt.
- What adaptations do you intend on making to the module? (250 words)
- If you will be the lead author on the adaptation, what type of mentorship will you need in adapting the chosen module? Please choose one or more of the following areas:
- Active learning techniques (pedagogy)
- 4DEE (Four Dimensional Ecology Education) framework
- Media, including audio, video, infographics, interactive games, photos, interactive timelines or maps, digital comics, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR)
- Interactive data tools
- If you will be participating as a mentor, please indicate in which of the above areas you will provide expertise.
- Describe the setting in which you plan to use the adapted module (250 words)
Once accepted into the Network, participants should commit to the following:
- Participate in the full FMN (First week in June through the last week in July, 2022)
- Create an adaptation of the selected module
- Share materials on the Gala Platform, with links posted on QUBES Hub
- Present the module to other participants in a friendly, peer-review process
- Revise the adapted module as needed to receive the 2022 OCELOTS Education Scholar Certificate
It is important that all participants are able to commit to the full experience. The greatest benefits of these experiences are generated in the interactions with colleagues. Your contributions will be critical to the success of this program.
