  • Biography

I have  a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology  and a Master of Science degree in Ecology/Wildlife Biology. I spent 5 years paddling kayaks and driving boats around on the Susquehanna River studying state-endangered Northern Map Turtles, so my expertise is in reptiles and amphibians but my interest is in everything related to plants and animals!

Not only do I teach biology, I’m also a river/survival guide and a snowboarding instructor. My "classrooms" constantly shift from traditional to nature centers to hiking trails to the hulls of rafts and canoes, so I love to keep things interactive! In all circumstances, my goal is to inspire at least one student to pursue a career in environmental stewardship.

On weekends and between semesters you can catch me hitting the slopes or paddling some kind of boat, but whitewater trips are my favorite. I also enjoy foraging for tasty edible plants; stringing up my hammock with a good book; and listening to true crime podcasts. I grew up near Baltimore and still teach in my home town, but I currently live with my Russian tortoise, Mary Shelly, closer to Washington DC.   (Where I also teach!)
