Biology Scholars Teaching with Data: Course Based Undergraduate Research
Application Information
Application deadline: April 11th, 2016
Applicants for the program must complete the individual application form (see link below) and have a supervisor (Dept. Head, Dean, PI, etc) complete the Institutional Support form (http://goo.gl/forms/7B3Sw0Uf4B). Applications are not complete until both pieces have been received.
The application collects basic contact and institutional information and includes answers to the following questions:

- Briefly describe how you address teaching in a scholarly way. Include examples of changes you are making in your classroom and any recent professional development in which you have participated. (400 words or less)
- Describe the common practices and assessments of student learning you use when teaching microbiology. Reflect on how your attitudes, understandings, and beliefs about the use of data to teach microbiology influence your current practices. Describe your main concerns and issues around teaching microbiology with data. (400 words or less)
The Institutional Support form asks the following information:
- Applicant name
- Institution name
- Name and title of institutional representative (must be a supervisor of the applicant, eg Dean, Dept Head, PI)
- Institutional representative contact information (email and phone)
- Describe the possible infrastructure and institutional support available to the applicant during the program. Please include information about the environment, such as any resources, policies, or initiatives, in place that will support this individual.
- Briefly describe how this particular individual is an appropriate representative of your department or institution. What skills and roles does he/she bring that will enable him/her to improve student learning?
- How will the individual contribute to a broader impact within your department and/or at your institution? For example, please describe the mechanisms available to participants to disseminate what they learn during the program to other faculty members.
Once accepted into the Program, participants should plan on the following:
- Participation begins approximately one month prior to the workshop with online assignments to establish the Faculty Mentoring Network (FMN).
- Participants will meet and share resources in a private group on the QUBESHub.
- Participants will attend the in person workshop in Boston. This workshop will be a dynamic, hands on workshop where we will explore some of the challenging aspects of teaching quantitative skills, and begin to develop or adapt materials for use in participants’ classrooms.
- After the workshop, participants will meet synchronously for 30 minutes once every two weeks. During these meetings, the mentor will facilitate discussions about participant progress toward meeting the FMN goals. Participants are expected to be active contributors in these meetings.
- Between online meetings, participants will work on their activities and share ideas and resources around adaptation and implementation with the group.
- The development phase of the project will run through the Summer, and the Implementation phase will run through Fall or Spring semester depending on teaching schedules.
It is important that all participants are able to commit to the full experience. The greatest benefits of these experiences are generated in the interactions with colleagues. Your contributions will be critical to the success of this program.
