ANNOUNCING

SCUDEM IV 2019 at Locations in the United States and Beyond

SCUDEM IV 2019 opens 1 November 2019 with Challenge Saturday on 9 November 2019. We are currently building the network of local host sites for SCUDEM IV 2019. If you and your school wish to bring the excitement of mathematical modeling, a supportive challenge for students, and a faculty development program to advance the use of modeling in differential equations coursework to your campus please contact us at Director@simiode.org.  We will work with and support Local Site Host Coordinators for success.  Complete details on hosting can be found here.  Registration for SCUDEM IV 2019 is 1 September 2019 - 25 October 2019.

OVERVIEW, DESCRIPTION, PAST EVENTS

SIMIODE is excited to offer a program for high school and undergraduate students: SIMIODE Challenge Using Differential Equation Modeling—SCUDEM. This challenge is for three member teams of students. SCUDEM takes place over a week-long period that begins on a Friday at each team’s individual home campus and culminates on Challenge Saturday at the end of the next week at a nearby regional host site in the United States and beyond.

Teams work at their home institution for a week developing approaches and solutions to a modeling problem of their choice and preparing an Executive Summary and 10 minute Presentation. The problems are designed so that every team may experience success in modeling, enhance their model building skills, and increase their confidence in modeling with differential equations. Problems are drawn from the physical, social, and life sciences.

On Challenge Saturday, teams travel with their faculty coach to a nearby regional host site. At check-in student teams turn in their Executive Summary for judging by coaches present as students then work on a small supplement  (NOT a redo) to their modeling problem for inclusion in their final Presentation. Faculty participate in workshops to help them incorporate more differential equations modeling in their coursework. The first part of the Faculty Development program engages students and faculty in live modeling scenarios to experience the joy of modeling and form the basis of discussions about the value of modeling in learning and teaching differential equations.

After lunch faculty discuss issues in teaching modeling while students engage in a fun team MathBowl. Finally, each team presents its 10 minute Presentation, judged by an audience of coaches and visiting faculty. The challenge culminates with an awards ceremony rounding out the day by 4:30 PM to allow time to travel home.

There is a $100 registration fee for each coach-team pair which includes both faculty development workshop and team participation. Additional teams from the same school, with each team having its own coach, preferably, may also register for $100 for each additional coach-team pair. All teams must have a faculty coach. Registration fees are paid through SIMIODE's PayPal portal which will be open from 1 September 2019 - 1 November 2019.  Additional faculty, who are not coaching a team, may join workshop and judging activities at no cost. Membership in SIMIODE is FREE.

Here is presentation overview about SCUDEM offered at the Joint Mathematics Meetings 2019 in Baltimore MD USA by Brian Winkel, Director SIMIODE.

At the Joint Mathematics Meetings 2019 there was a MAA Contributed Paper Session on Introducing Mathematical Modeling through Competitions offered. This session featured talks on SCUDEM as well as COMAP's MCM and ICM and several other competitions. The talk presentation materials is available here.
