Description

With calls to expand quantitative learning experiences in undergraduate biology, new curricular offerings are needed. However, attitudes towards math among biology-interested college students vary greatly. Quantitatively-focused material might serve to deter some students, particularly students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in STEM. Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) have demonstrated positive impacts on student learning, retention in STEM, and attitudes toward science. As such, CUREs may offer an ideal structure for immersive introductory quantitative experiences that build fundamental quantitative skills while developing positive student attitudes toward the role of math and programming in biology. In this poster we outline the process of designing, implementing, and assessing a new quantitative biology CURE course series.
