SENCER Educators as Civic Educators

Assessing our impact on civic scientific literacy

Today many instructors are embedding broader civic and social justice issues in their STEM teaching. Are you interested in knowing if your teaching is improving your students’ engagement with civic issues and social justice as well as their learning in science? Apply now to join us for the Spring 2021 SENCER/QUBES Faculty Mentoring Network (FMN).

Participants in this FMN will focus on how to apply, adapt, and integrate meaningful forms of assessment for these outcomes in their STEM-related courses. Accepted applicants will customize and implement newly designed assessment modules/approaches from a variety of disciplines. While doing this, they will participate in biweekly virtual sessions to collaborate with and support others in the network and receive mentoring.

Description: SENCER ( joining forces with QUBES ( to work with faculty who are teaching through civic issues that are interested in adapting and implementing selected assessment modules/approaches in their virtual classrooms. Participating educators are encouraged to mix and match parts of modules and customize them for use in their classrooms. 

Dates & Location: The virtual kick-off will be held in mid-Jan, 2021 (date and time TBD). The FMN will continue online to support the customization and implementation of assessment activities in your course during the Spring 2021 semester.

How to Apply: Applications are due Dec 1st, 2020. You can follow this link to view the application form. Accepted applicants will be notified by December 15th. Space is limited, only 15 participants will be selected.

Commitment and Benefits of Participation: To qualify, participants must be willing to incorporate the selected materials into at least two class periods (or equivalent) in their teaching during the Spring 20201 semester. Participants must also be able to commit ~1 hour per week for working with mentors and collaborating with other participants around the customization and implementation of the assessment materials. Additional time outside of these discussions may be required for independent work on adapting and reviewing modules.

**Access to assessment modules- participants will incorporate at least two of the selected materials in Spring 2021 classes 

Our Modules will include 

  1. Diagnostic Assessment - What do your students know about the topic/concept/idea before and after your learning experience? We’ll show you how SENCER faculty are doing this in their courses
  2. Formative Assessment - How can you measure learning in real-time so determine if your students are making gains to your outcomes. Successful strategies being employed by SENCER faculty will be demonstrated 
  3. Summative Assessment - Did you reach your course learning outcomes? How can portfolios be used to demonstrate student strides in your classroom? What about better ways of examining learning? How do SENCER faculty integrate civic and scientific literacy into their exams? 
  4. Alternative forms of Assessment - We will connect you to other, novel and exciting ways SENCER faculty are integrating assessment and teaching across the disciplines 

**Online support throughout the process of implementing new materials in your course.  Access to peer mentors on lecture/classroom/lab effective tips and strategies in small group virtual meetings every two weeks

**Recognition as a SENCER Assessment Scholar upon completion of all network requirements. We will provide a letter and feature you on our NCSCE website.
