  • Biography
My name is Derek Sollberger, and I am a continuing lecturer of applied mathematics at UC Merced. I am glad to be back at BIOME. This is the third summer event that I will have attended with BioQuest/QUBES. It is great to recognize several of you from our faculty mentoring network activities and working groups (Genome Solver, NEON, NIBLSE, SENCER, Project EDDIE, decentralized grading). For this conference, I have hastily slapped together some materials for my Implicit Bias in Data Visualization workshop, and I hope to see you there!

    BED

I mainly teach Data Science and Probability courses at UC Merced for the physical and life science students (i.e. different audiences), and I have been working with Dr. Petra Kranzfelder and Dr. Cristie Donham on some pedagogy research with BioMAPS. Over the past year or so, some modifications to my classroom environment have been pleasant.

Two semesters of Bio 18 without quizzes/exam (i.e. decentralized grading) instead focusing on in-class labs and the semester project, and the students love this setting
The LearnR apps (which I presented at BIOME last year!) have simultaneously streamlined the data coding practice and lets students learn at their own pace
Quick, before-lecture quizzes allow me to apply just-in-time remediation without having to fully flip a classroom

    BATH

In Bio 18, I am hoping to add a casual collection of journal articles to immerse my sophomore students into scientific literature and bring together Scientist Spotlights, but for data scientists
In Math 32, I am hoping to make interactive slides with Quarto and push taught materials into Bayesian approaches
For research, I am currently processing the data of BioSQuaRE surveys (along with pre- and post-test surveys), and I hope to post my poster below on Wednesday.

    BEYOND

I am a data science nerd (duh!)
On labor matters, my colleagues and I finished a 3-year contract negotiation
In my LGBT allyship, I have taken a leadership position with the Bisexual Research Group. We are currently gearing up for our International Bisexual Research Conference on September 24. I am so happy to get Mary Kenney to be a keynote speaker. Her claim to fame is being a lead writer for the video game Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
