Sunday, Jan 5, 2020 - Introductions and Self-Awareness
All activities Sunday will take place at the Conference Center
- 1:00 - 2:00pm Apophatic listening exercise based on ‘Three miles’
Participants reflect on provided prompts related to ‘Three miles’ then pair up and engage in apophatic listening practice; share out partner’s responses without categorization or analysis or ‘teacher-brain.’ - 2:00 - 2:45pm Introductions
Introduce the team, set communication guidelines for group interaction and workshop engagement, review HHMI ground rules. - 2:45 - 3:45pm The revolution will be backward designed - The social context of teaching and learning
Lecture to present the big-picture overview of the Deep-teaching model and some examples about classroom implementation and outcomes from his own practice; Introduces the big-picture structure of the workshop: Start with examination of self in the context of social structures, development of empathy for student experiences, and then use that framing to examine pedagogy, climate, and network leverage. - 3:45 - 4:00pm BREAK
- 4:00 - 4:45pm A Chance at Birth - Power and privilege in higher education
Modified ‘privilege walk’ activity; engages reflection of historical contingencies and social systems that influence life experiences of those from different backgrounds. - 4:45 - 5:30pm Dimensions of Identity & Cycle of Socialization
Facilitated participant reflection on their own identities and how the various components feel more pronounced in different situations and how they influence how others treat/perceive us in different situations. Then connect to ‘Cycle of Socialization’ and how we are socialized to play certain roles and how we perpetuate systems of oppression, privilege, and power.

- 6:30 - 7:30pm Unpacking the IAT
Participants will have an opportunity to discuss their experiences taking the IAT, make connections to the influence of systems of privilege/power/oppression/-isms and broad societal stereotypes, and consider how to mitigate the effects of implicit biases on their course design and interactions with students. - 7:30 - 8:30pm SOCIAL

Participants explore how students' identities and backgrounds intersect with their experiences in Higher Ed and in STEM and begin to consider our faculty roles in creating equitable and inclusive learning environments. - 10:30 - 10:45am BREAK

Analysis of institutional data to examine data patterns and default reactions to the data, and reframe responses to the data employing equity (rather than diversity & deficit) cognitive frames - 12:00 - 1:00pm LUNCH

Discussion of course design strategies and assignments that allow you to learn about students in authentic and holistic ways - 2:00 - 3:30pm Guided review of course feedback
Discussion of ways to gather student feedback at the beginning and throughout the course, followed by a focus on using end-of-course evaluations as a tool for reflecting on one’s own practice - 3:30 - 3:45pm BREAK

In conversation with research on the role of emotions in the learning environment, this session will explore how experimenting with the craft of theatre can help us reflectively practice our ability to authentically connect with our students - a foundational element in our efforts to establish relationships and facilitate community building, validate multiple contributions and perspectives, and respond to unexpected situations. Participants will engage in some theatre exercises focused on developing awareness of our presence, openness, spontaneity, and flexibility as instructors. - 10:30 - 10:45am BREAK

- 1:15 - 2:15pm The role of early intervention in inclusive practices
Well designed formative assessment provides instructors the opportunity to engage with students early in the course on the specifics of any difficulties they may have. Depending on the difficulty, instructors need to be careful and intentional on how they respond to them. In this session we will unpack the ways in which early intervention can promote inclusion and success in the higher ed classroom. - 2:15 - 3:30pm Who are your allies? (Network Leverage/Institutional Change)
The success of inclusive practices requires the collaborative efforts of multiple stakeholders. In this session we will discuss strategies to identify and leverage resources on campus to advance inclusive outcomes. - 3:30 - 3:45pm BREAK
