Overview:
Deep Teaching Residency-II (DTR-II) participants will leave this experience with a specific plan to further their inclusive aims during the academic year 2020/21. Plans will reflect lessons from the implementation that occurred in Spring 2020, as well as the unique features of the post-COVID higher education landscape. As always, we will pay special attention to issues of equity, which have been heightened by the increased awareness coming from a turbulent summer in the United States.

To this end, the specific aims of DTR-II is to

  • Help participants cultivate an inclusive teaching plan for the 2020/2021 academic year
  • Provide support for equitable online teaching practices
  • Centralize the role of antiracism in inclusive teaching

Welcome back to DTR: How are you? (Dewsbury; All facilitators) (1:30 - 2:30 PM)
This session will provide an overview and roadmap for our four days together in addition to understanding the state of things where you are. Small discussions and conversations around how we coped with Spring 2020 and what is on the horizon for the coming academic year will be integral to this session.

Break (2:30 - 2:45PM)

Lesson from the passing storm (Dewsbury) (2:45 - 3:30PM)

Trials are only as useful as the ways in which we learn and grow for them to affect meaningful change in our communities. In this talk, we reflect on the lessons gained from Spring 2020 and focus on our empowerment to strategically pivot ourselves towards antiracist futures.

Break (3:30 - 3:45PM)

Trauma-Informed Instruction and the Cycle of Liberation (Imad) (3:45 - 5:00PM)

In order to be able to help students, we need to first be able to recognize trauma in ourselves. This session will address the impact of the ongoing pandemic and the long-ignored calls for racial justice on our sense of self and overall well-being. What lessons can we learn from neuroscience to help us better negotiate the pain and anxiety? How can we leverage the healing power of the community to help us move forward and help ourselves and our students continue to learn and thrive?

Day 2. Thurs. July 30th: How then shall I teach? (1:00pm-4:45pm)

Lessons from the Spring - DTR presentations (Killpack) (1:00 - 2:00PM)
Participant volunteers will share short presentations about implementation and/or outcomes from their DTR-related projects that occurred in the Spring 2020 semester.

Break (2:00 - 2:15PM)

Transformative teaching in a time of transitions (Killpack/McGowan/Santucci) (2:15 - 3:30PM)

Many of us will be teaching in remote/online modalities in the fall and thinking through how to build and maintain the sense of belonging in this environment. We will discuss how the inclusive pedagogical principles of transparency, resilience, and caring can help us put empathy and equity-informed considerations into course design practices.

Break (3:30 - 3:45PM)

Becoming an audacious STEM educator (Imad/Sandoval) (3:45 - 4:45PM)

In this session we will consider why there is a “fierce urgency” to raise the consciousness of higher education and begin to look at our teaching practices as a foundation for our work in a liberatory pedagogy.

Day 3. Tues. August 4th: Planning for action (12:00pm-2:45pm)

Zoom link – (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84364196858?pwd=ZDFJZGlCUzVKTG9HcjhWNFd5cWhudz09)

Following and leading: Joining with others to move beyond optical allyship (Sandoval) (12:00 - 1:00PM)

Systemic change requires authentic allyship and collective action. It requires humility, and the ability to deeply listen to, learn from, and partner with colleagues already engaged in this work. It also requires risk-taking, and a willingness to build a larger community of audacious educators who are willing to disrupt the usual and work toward change. In this session, we will discuss ways to identify and collaborate with campus partners to address systemic inequality.

Break - (1:00 - 1:15PM)

Teams brainstorm (All facilitators) (1:15 - 2:45PM)
